(ཟུར་མང་) an important historical region and network of monasteries in Kham (eastern Tibet). Particularly associated with the Surmang branch of the Karma Kagyu tradition. It has a historical connection with nonconventional yogic practitioners. The Trungpa lineage comes from Surmang. Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche was born in this region and recognized as the 11th Trungpa tulku. His predecessor was an influential teacher of the traditions from Surmang.
Four-Armed Mahākāla is a protector of Surmang monastery, bound by Künga Namgyal.
